Virginia City Community Survey Results: A Historic Future in the Making

Last Updated 4/2/2025Posted in Community News, Surveys

The Virginia City Main Street & Storey County Chamber of Commerce recently conducted a Community Needs Survey to understand what matters most to the people who live, work, and visit our town. With 131 thoughtful responses, your voices spoke loud and clear: we are a town that loves its past and is ready to shape a thoughtful, thriving, and inclusive future.

Community Priorities: Where We Stand Together

Respondents were asked to identify the most important aspects of our community. Here's how your priorities stack up:

  • Historic Preservation – selected by 119 respondents (90.8%)

  • Economic Growth – 114 responses (87.0%)

  • Community Engagement – 108 responses (82.4%)

  • Tourism – 101 responses (77.1%)

  • Public Safety – 92 responses (70.2%)

  • Cultural Inclusiveness – 87 responses (66.4%)

  • Outdoor Recreation – 71 responses (54.2%)

This paints a powerful picture: while we honor our roots, we're eager for inclusive growth and deeper connection.

What Needs More Love?

When asked which parts of our story are under-recognized or need protection, these were the top responses:

  • Oral Histories & Local Legends – 45 responses (34.4%)

  • Historic Architecture (facades, signage, etc.) – 41 responses (31.3%)

  • Mining History Sites & Artifacts – 28 responses (21.4%)

  • Museums & Cultural Institutions – 18 responses (13.7%)

🪶 Why this matters: These aren't just artifacts or aesthetics—they’re pieces of identity. They reflect the lived experiences of those who came before us and help future generations feel rooted in something real.

Ideas to Revitalize and Grow

From open-ended responses and thematic analysis, several key ideas emerged—fresh, forward-looking, and deeply connected to our town’s legacy:

  • Tech mentorship programs where youth teach seniors and engage in intergenerational storytelling

  • Community festivals centered on heritage, food, art, and culture—not just alcohol

  • Restoration of architectural features, buried power lines, and beautified downtown infrastructure

  • QR-coded history walks, mine site interpretation, and public art honoring our diverse past

  • Volunteer networks for caretaking historical sites and sharing knowledge

🛠️ These aren't just dreams—they’re blueprints for sustainable revitalization that includes everyone.

Challenges to Tackle

Your responses also made clear where we need to grow:

  • Perceptions of exclusion: Calls for removing political and discriminatory signage appeared repeatedly. Many said they feel unwelcome, especially newcomers, youth, and marginalized groups.

  • Tourism vs. Residency: Some expressed frustration that decisions favor short-term visitors over long-term well-being.

  • Communication gaps: Information isn't always reaching part-time residents, renters, and younger folks.

  • Infrastructure & ADA Access: Sidewalks, parking, internet, and event spaces need serious improvement.

  • Limited representation: The community wants broader stories—shared across events and museums.

💥 These are pain points, yes. But they’re also pressure points for meaningful change.

Your Vision in One Word

We asked: “What one word best describes your vision for Virginia City’s future?” These rose to the top:

  • History

  • Community

  • Preservation

  • Growth

  • Diversity

  • Respect

Imagine a future where these six words describe us completely. That’s the opportunity we have—starting now.
